Tips
4. Learn Some Easy Terminology
It can be super helpful for some to learn terminology when working with a new skill. It's easier to search for what you need, being materials or a simple "how to" video.
5. Materials
Depending on your skill level and type of project, you want to use the ideal quality of materials suited to that project. For example, if you are wire wrapping stones that are more for display you wouldn't want to use fine silver or gold -- you'd most likely go for a copper based wire. On the flip-side -- if you're wanting to make an everyday wear type of jewelry, you'll want to use sterling silver, steel or gold materials to increase the longevity and value of your pieces. While most copper wires in stores are tarnish resistant (unlike silver), it will oxidize and react with the oils on your body, turning your skin green and is overall less resilient for everyday wear.
6. Be kind to yourself.
It's okay if you're not the world's craftiest person! Starting a new skill can be difficult. Nothing has to be perfect the first go around -- it took me literal years to be as proficient with my wire skills as I am.
1. Proper Tools
To get the job done right, it's important to make sure you're using the proper tools for the desired task. For example: to make and tie off a loop, you wouldn't use needle nose pliers, you'd go for your round nose pliers.
2. Consistency
Usually, to make a cohesive piece, you want to maintain some consistency with materials. How I personally do this is by using matching colored metals, monochromatic themes and a standardized size of wire loops, chain lengths and hoop sizes.
3. Clean Workspace
It's best to have a clean and organized workspace! Pieces don't get lost and you have room for layouts and working.
